Vince Young was one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in college football history. After leading his team to two rose victories and a national championship against heavily favored USC Trojans, Vince Young has found himself in a tough situation. Vince Young was selected as the third overall pick in 2006 by the Tennessee Titans and started eight games his rookie season and went on to win offensive rookie of the year honors. In his second season Young led the Titans to a playoff birth, but lost to the Chargers in the first round.
In 2008 Young was suffered a knee injury in week one and was supposed to be out only 2-3 weeks. After spending time on the bench Young was suffering many mental problems and became mentally unstable for a little while. No one knows exactly what was going on in Young's head, but it cost him valuable time. After this ordeal coach Jeff Fisher elected to stay with veteran quarterback Kerry Collins and Young would assume backup responsibilities. Collins is more of a game manager than a playmaker, but led the Titans to a division title and the best record in the NFL.
So what is the outlook for Young in 2009? Jeff Fisher has already stated that Young will have to do everything to win his job back and it will not be an "open" competition at the start of camp. Young is definitely capable of being the starting quarterback and has already proven that. He brings many things that Collins cannot do physically, but he needs to show he is mentally ready to be the leader of this football team.
I would not be surprised if Young earns his spot back, but it will take time and I don't expect him to be the starter week one. But with the loss of defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth this off-season the Titans could use another playmaker on the offensive side of the ball and Young could provide that as long as he is mentally ready. Remember, all Vince Young as done since his college days is win. Young has already proven he can win in the NFL provided he is ready to go both physically and mentally. This will be an interesting story line during the Titans training camp in July for NFL fans.
