It's official at this point. No team has been a bigger surprise than the New York Jets. Did anyone really expect them to make the AFC conference championship game?
Depending on when you read this article, the game may have already taken place. The Jets will likely have been eliminated by the Colts if you're reading this after the game took place.
On the other hand, nothing seems to be unreasonable to expect at this point. Did anyone think they would win out their last few games of the season, sneak into the playoffs, and then beat the Bengals and Chargers on the road?
This is a team that wasn't supposed to have made the playoffs by any stretch of the imagination. Between the lack of experience Mark Sanchez brings to the table and the fact that this was a team with a rookie coach, no one expected to see this once 5-7 team suddenly here.
One of the best defenses and run games in the NFL brought them here. While Sanchez by no means put up impressive numbers during the season, he was certainly efficient when his team needed him to be, limiting his turnovers and making big passes when needed.
At this point, the Jets have won two straight playoff games and have momentum on their side. Having beaten the San Diego Chargers, a team that many deemed the most dangerous in football given their 11 game win streak before the game, nothing should be off the table for the Jets at this point.
This is a team with confidence and a nothing to lose mentality. Looking back at the last two years of playoff football, the Giants and the Cardinals both fit the same mold, and both teams ended up finding their way to the Super Bowl.
No matter what happens from here, this year's surprise team was undoubtedly the Jets.
